Denmark is home to a dynamic thrash metal scene with bands such as Volbeat, Mercenary, and Konkhra among many others. And that particular gig in Loppen in Copenhagen surely made you think twice about forming your own band. True, you’ve taken hold of the best guitar known to man that is a gift from the metal gods—a Jackson Soloist S2H but this isn’t like the Pick of Destiny where you can just transform into the best band in the world. Promoting your music and your band takes time, discipline and guts. Talent is a definite prerequisite and unfortunately, this doesn’t happen overnight. With the advent of the internet, it’s now easier and faster to get to your core audience. So how do you maximize these resources?
Let’s start with the traditional way of getting your music promoted. If you have a band manager, you’re lucky if he or she can also act as your publicist as well. Your manager not only fixes your gig schedule and what not but also has a database of media connections—from journalists to producers to magazine editors even bloggers whom he or she can easily be in touch with. A solid press kit is in order if you want your band to get noticed by the press. You’ll have to include your latest album or EP with a complete album artwork and a short bio about your band as well. This bio should also include your track list and a fact sheet and a great photo of your band. Don’t forget to include all the contact details of your band—your manager’s mobile number, email address, website and all your band’s social networking sites—Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr etc. Be sure to also check out They Shoot Music in Norrebro for the best band rehearsal space in Copenhagen.
When it comes to promoting your band online, your email mailing list is just as important as your media contacts. It’s really important to send email blasts of your band’s latest news, updates and gig schedules. Your blog is also essential in keeping touch with your fans as it will show teasers or streaming of your band’s latest track or EPs. Finally, word of mouth is absolutely a game changer when it comes to a band’s success. Go around, play as many gigs as you can, you’ll soon find out which venues and bars are best for your brand of metal. After shamelessly promoting your band online and beyond, why not relax your weary self and play some online games. If you’re into card games, you can meet new friends and even fellow metal heads via poker sites such as partypoker with its exciting online community. You can join any poker room you want and practice your gaming strategies and skills with its easy to use game interface and unique game play. Scott Ian of Anthrax and Godsmack’s Sully Erna are known to break into the professional world of poker and even join the World Series of Poker. You can also improve your game by watching video tutorials online and getting some tips and pointers from Denmark’s best poker player, Gus Hansen.
